coffea

In 1999 I caught up with my childhood friend Marcos Piffer. Twenty-one years had gone by since he had sounded out that he would expose his soul on polychrome images through photography.

In the interim I had lived in the USA working with corporations to make the move towards sustainability, while Marcos had captured the essence of the spaces, the people, and the lives he photographed here in Brazil intimately portrayed in unparalleled books about the São Paulo´s Northern Coast Line, The City of Santos, and the Diamantina Plateau.

In 2002, with like minds about the environment and ethics, Marcos and I sat out on a 12--month project about the work, the land, and the people of Brazil´s coffee. Our goal is to showcase Brazilian coffee as it shall be seen: strong, proud, trustworthy, and human. Through his lense, this huge process´ critical moment doesn’t go unnoticed. He spent a year living the daily lives, the stories, the joys, the exhaustion, and the rewards of those who produce one of the best things Brazil has to offer: our coffee..

The images expose a deep understanding of the importance our natural, human, social, and financial capital has to sustainable coffee production. This showing is only a small portion of a much greater work that no doubt will portray the soul of Brazilian coffee.
